John M. Grant

John Grant has been an active Local 770 union member since 1976. John worked as a meat packer for 9 years at the Vernon slaughterhouse, Farmer John. During that time, he served as a shop steward, picket captain, and bargaining committee member. In 1977, he was reinstated by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) after being illegally fired for strike-related activities.

In 1985, John joined Local 770 as a Union Representative. He has since served as a trustee for the pension and medical benefit trusts, Director of the Packinghouse Division, and as Local 770's In-House Counsel. He has served on the Southern California Plant Closing Committee, Executive Board of the Los Angeles City Workforce Investment Board, a founding member on the Los Angeles Committee on Safety and Health, the Advisory Board of the LATTC amd UCLA Labor Center, the Executive Committee of Housing LA (successfully advocating for more low cost housing), the LAANE Executive Board, and the Los Angeles Food Policy Committee.

John Grant graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UC, Santa Barbara (1973, B.A. in Urban Studies), Loyola Law School, Los Angeles (J.D. 1976) and Los Angeles Trade Technical College Labor Center (1984, Degree in Labor Studies).




Kathy Finn, Secretary-Treasurer

Ms. Finn has been with UFCW Local 770 since 1997. Ms. Finn began representing day laborers while still in law school and then, after graduating in 1990, worked for the union-side labor law firm that represents Local 770 as well as other UFCW Locals. Finn currently serves as a trustee on the Southern California UFCW Health & Welfare Fund and the Pension Fund. She also assists in negotiating many of Local 770's contracts and is passionate about ensuring that our members' health and pension benefits are protected.

Kathy Finn received a bachelors degree from UC Santa Barbara in 1986 and a law degree from UCLA in 1990.


Cheryl Butler, Recorder

Lavanza “Cheryl” Butler began her career as a head pharmacist for Rite Aid from 1980 to 2002 before she joined Local 770 as a Vice President, Union Representative and now Recorder.  Cheryl has also been reappointed to the California State Board of Pharmacy, where she has served since 2013.  Butler is also a member of the Professional Pharmacist Division Executive Board, California Pharmacists Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.



Paul Edwards, Field Director

Paul served as a union representative for 15 years before becoming Local 770's Field Director overseeing all field activities for union representatives in the Food and Drug divisions.

Paul graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelors degree in Political Science with a minor in Economics.

Rigo Valdez

Rigo Valdez is the Director of Organizing responsible for the development and implementation of outreach and organizing programs for Local 770. 

Rigo also serves as the Commissioner on the Los Angeles County, Immigrant Protection and Advancement Taskforce.

Mr. Valdez is a proud founding member of UFCW's OUTreach - a constituency group dedicated to fighting for full equality for LGBT workers on their jobs and in their unions.

Mr. Valdez has led and championed many successful organizing campaigns with the AFL CIO and the UFCW International Union in Washington D.C.  He studied at the San Diego University. 

Nam Le, Political Director

Nam Le serves as the UFCW Political Director, where he leads the day-to-day political operations. 

He has spent the last 17 years in politics gaining a full range of experience and skills in campaign management and consulting. His campaign expertise includes strategic planning, budgets, staff supervision, outreach, and opposition research. He has experience in executing successful campaigns, statewide throughout California and the Los Angeles region.

Prior to joining UFCW, Nam served in the California State Legislature as District Director to Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally from South Los Angeles. There he gained experience and a passion for public policy, and witnessed that effective government can make a difference in people's lives. His whole professional life has involved politics and public policy including economic development, housing and labor issues.

Nam is Vice-President of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance Los Angeles, AFL-CIO, the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American union members.
